The Kanaka Durga temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Kanaka Durga situated on the Indrakeeladri Hill on the banks of Krishna river in Vijayawada. The temple is mentioned in the Rig Veda, Skanda Purana, and many ancient texts.
According to mythology, the demon king Mahishasura was causing havoc. All the gods prayed to Goddess Parvati. She took the form of Durga and defeated Mahishasura on the Vindhya mountain. Later she moved to Indrakeeladri to reside permanently.
The temple is managed by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Endowments Department. The temple has a rich history of royal patronage from the Vijayanagara Empire and later the Qutb Shahis and Nizams.
